Xen Orchestra: Agentless Management and Backup for Your XCP-ng Infrastructure

If you're running XCP-ng or XenServer in your homelab or at work, you know the pain of juggling multiple tools just to keep things running. You've got one interface for managing VMs, another for backups, and maybe a third for monitoring. Xen Orchestra aims to consolidate all of that into a single solution—no agents required.

What It Does

Xen Orchestra (often shortened to XO) is a complete solution for visualizing, managing, backing up, and delegating your XCP-ng or XenServer infrastructure. The key detail here is that it works without installing any agents on your hosts or VMs. You point it at your infrastructure, and it handles the rest.

The project provides three main interfaces: a web UI, a CLI, and a REST API. There's also a Terraform provider available, along with other connectors and plugins. The web UI gives you a centralized view of your entire setup, which is particularly useful if you're managing infrastructure across multiple datacenters or locations. From VM creation and migration to metrics and statistics, the goal is to give you one place to handle administration tasks.

The backup capabilities are extensive. You can choose from rolling snapshots, full backup and replication, incremental backup and replication, mirror backup, and S3 support. The idea is that you pick the backup mode that fits your needs rather than being locked into a single approach.

Why It's Cool

  • No agents means less overhead. You don't need to install, update, or troubleshoot software on every host and VM you manage. That's a significant simplification if you've ever dealt with agent-based management tools that break during upgrades or add resource overhead.

  • Backup options that actually cover different scenarios. The range of backup modes—from rolling snapshots to incremental replication to S3 support—means you're not forced into one strategy. You can use lightweight snapshots for quick recovery points and full replication for disaster recovery, all from the same interface.

  • Built for multi-site setups. The centralized interface works across datacenters at various locations, and XO proxies help with remote sites. If your infrastructure isn't all in one rack, this matters.

  • Cloud enablement is part of the design. Group management, resource delegation, and group administration are built in. If you're running something that resembles a private cloud or need to delegate access to different teams, those features are already there rather than bolted on.

  • Multiple ways to interact. Some people prefer clicking through a UI. Others want to script everything via CLI or API. Having all three options (plus Terraform) means you can work the way that suits you or your team.

How to Try It

The quickest way to get started is through the deploy form on the Vates website:

  1. Log in to your account at vates.tech/deploy
  2. Use the deploy form to set up Xen Orchestra

For more detailed instructions, the official documentation lives at docs.xen-orchestra.com. Documentation updates are deployed automatically once per day, so it stays reasonably current.

The source code is available on GitHub at github.com/vatesfr/xen-orchestra. The project is licensed under AGPL3 and maintained by Vates.

If you're interested in contributing translations, there's a translation platform at translate.vates.tech where you can help localize XO into more languages.

Final Thoughts

Xen Orchestra is clearly built for people who take their XCP-ng or XenServer infrastructure seriously—whether that's a homelab with a few VMs or a multi-site deployment that needs proper backup and delegation. The agentless approach and the breadth of backup options are the standout features here. If you're already in the XCP-ng ecosystem, it's worth a look. If you're evaluating virtualization platforms and management tools, the fact that XO exists and is actively maintained is a point in XCP-ng's favor. The AGPL3 license means you can inspect the code and contribute back if you want to get involved.
