A Terminal UI That Turns DeepSeek Harness Into Something You Actually Want to Stare At

Most terminal interfaces for AI tools feel like an afterthought—plain text scrolling by, no sense of what's happening under the hood, and no way to go back when you realize you wanted to change something three turns ago. If you've ever wished your coding assistant's interface felt less like a log file and more like a tool, dsh-TUI might be what you're looking for.

What It Does

dsh-TUI is an interactive terminal UI plugin for DeepSeek Harness. It's built as a pure plugin—meaning it mounts without touching the core of DSH, and uninstalling it leaves no patches behind. That's a deliberate architectural choice, and it matters.

The plugin layers a full terminal-native interface on top of your DeepSeek Harness sessions. You get streaming Markdown rendering, tool cards, / and @ completion, #L12-14 line range references, history search, and a bilingual UI (Chinese and English). There's a timeline rail where every turn is clickable, a context progress bar, a TPS gauge, cache hit rate, token counts, and session cost estimates that include subagents. Images render as Kitty or Sixel thumbnails with centered preview, zoom, and pan. Mermaid fences get drawn as Unicode diagrams. LaTeX math shows up as Unicode text, with optional image-based rendering for display blocks on graphics-capable terminals.

Beyond the visual layer, there's a session manager with /resume, /home, /agentview, and /bg. Session workflows include /new, /compact, /export, /btw, model hot-switching, forking, rewinding, vim keybindings, and a fullscreen draft editor. Account sign-in supports pi-ai OAuth for ChatGPT/Codex, Claude, and Grok, plus DeepSeek browser sign-in as deepseek-account on DSH 0.2.0-rc.1 and later. You can use /provider or /auth without installing anything else.

It's published on npm as @deepseek-harness-tui/dsh-tui under the MIT license, currently in public beta.

Why It's Cool

The plugin architecture is the right call. Installing a UI shouldn't mean forking a project or maintaining a patched branch. The fact that dsh-TUI mounts cleanly and uninstalls cleanly means you can try it without commitment. That's how tools should work.

The pixel whale is a genuinely fun touch. Three startup intros, click to wake, and it freezes after your first task—a small detail that makes the terminal feel less sterile. It's not going to change your workflow, but it's the kind of thing that makes you smile when you open a session.

Double-Esc time rewind is the feature I'd actually use daily. Being able to rewind a conversation to an earlier point without starting over is one of those things you don't realize you need until you have it. Combined with forking and the clickable timeline rail, you get real control over session history instead of just scrolling up and hoping.

Built for long sessions, not demos. Event-driven projection, virtualization, and bounded caches—these aren't glamorous features, but they're what keep a TUI responsive after you've been working in it for hours. The README explicitly calls this out, and it suggests the author has actually used their own tool for extended periods.

The IDE selection channel is a small but clever integration. A VS Code selection lands directly in your prompt. It's the kind of cross-tool bridge that saves you from copy-paste gymnastics.

DSH integrations run deep. Presets, skills, MCP, goals, todos, subagents, questionnaires—dsh-TUI isn't just a pretty face on top of DSH. It surfaces the harness's actual capabilities in a usable way.

How to Try It

The plugin is distributed via npm, so installation is straightforward if you already have DeepSeek Harness set up.

  1. Install the package:
npm install @deepseek-harness-tui/dsh-tui
  1. Mount it as a plugin in your DSH configuration. Since it's a pure plugin with no core changes, you don't need to patch or rebuild anything.

  2. Start a session and the TUI should initialize with the pixel whale intro.

For detailed keybindings and commands, the README points to docs/interaction.en.md. The full documentation index lives at docs/README.md in the repository.

The project is in public beta, so expect some rough edges. If you run into issues or want to follow development, the repo is at github.com/ccch1mneyyy/dsh-TUI.

Final Thoughts

dsh-TUI is for developers who already use DeepSeek Harness and want a terminal interface that respects both their attention and their terminal. It's not trying to be a general-purpose AI chat client—it's a focused plugin that makes one specific tool significantly nicer to use. The public beta status means it's not for everyone yet, but if you're comfortable with that, the feature set is already substantial. The clean plugin architecture is the real selling point here—it means trying it costs you nothing but a few minutes.
