Backing Up Android App Data Without Losing Your Mind

You've flashed a new ROM, wiped your phone, and then realized you forgot to back up the one app whose data actually mattered. Or maybe you share a device with a family member and want to back up only their profile. Android's built-in backup story has never been great for either case. DataBackup is an open-source app that takes a different approach: it uses root access to pull app data directly, supports multiple users on the same device, and can push backups to the cloud.

What It Does

DataBackup is a free, open-source Android application for backing up app data. It requires root access and works with Magisk, KernelSU, and APatch. The project builds on the speed-backup script by CoolApk user 落叶凄凉TEL, and the README is upfront that it was created with that author's consent.

Beyond the root requirement, the feature list is short but pointed: multi-user support, cloud backup, what the README calls "100% data integrity," and an emphasis on being fast and easy. The screenshots suggest a fairly conventional Android app interface, but the underlying job is the one that matters—getting your data out of /data and somewhere safe without corrupting it along the way.

Why It's Cool

  • Root-based backups mean actual data, not just APKs. Most backup tools either rely on Android's limited built-in mechanisms or only save the installable package. Going through root lets DataBackup reach the app data itself, which is usually the part you can't easily recreate.

  • Multi-user support is a genuinely useful niche. Shared tablets, work profiles, and secondary accounts are common, but backup tools often ignore them entirely. If you manage a device with more than one user, this is one of the few options that addresses it.

  • Cloud support adds a second layer of safety. A local backup is only as good as the storage it lives on. Being able to send backups off-device means a lost or bricked phone doesn't take your data with it.

  • It has a real lineage. The project is derived from a script that earned a following in the Android modding community, and the README is explicit about that origin rather than pretending the idea appeared from nowhere. That's a good sign for anyone who cares about where their tools come from.

  • The integrity claim matters. "100% data integrity" is a strong statement, but it's the right thing to care about in a backup tool. A backup that silently corrupts is worse than no backup, because you don't find out until you need it.

How to Try It

First, make sure your device is rooted with Magisk, KernelSU, or APatch—without that, the app won't do its job.

You can install it from a few places:

  1. F-Droid – look for the com.xayah.databackup.foss package.
  2. IzzyOnDroid – the same package is available through that repo.
  3. GitHub Releases – grab the latest APK directly from the releases page.

Once installed, the official documentation is the place to start—the README defers to it for usage details rather than cramming instructions into the repo page.

The source lives at github.com/XayahSuSuSu/Android-DataBackup. If you want to help with translations, the project uses Weblate and links to it from the README. There's also a Telegram channel and group if you prefer to follow development or ask questions there.

Final Thoughts

DataBackup is a focused tool for a specific audience: people with rooted Android devices who want control over their app data and aren't satisfied with the stock options. If you're not rooted, this isn't for you, and the README doesn't pretend otherwise. If you are, the combination of multi-user support and cloud backup is hard to find elsewhere in one package. It's a small project with a clear purpose, and for the right user, that's exactly what you want.
